Default Open Access License

JM publishes articles under the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license unless otherwise specified. This license allows others to share and adapt the work for any purpose, including commercial use, provided proper attribution is given.

CC BY summary: You keep copyright. Readers may copy, distribute, remix, or build on the work with clear attribution to the original authors and the journal.

Author Rights

What Authors Keep

  • Copyright ownership remains with the authors.
  • Authors may share the final published PDF on personal, institutional, or subject repositories.
  • Authors may reuse figures and content in future works with proper citation.
  • Authors may distribute the article to collaborators and students without restriction.

Authors are encouraged to post the accepted or published version on institutional profiles, lab pages, and preprint servers with the DOI to improve visibility.

Attribution

How Attribution Should Appear

Reuse must include appropriate credit to the authors, article title, journal name, and DOI. A typical attribution includes the author names, year, and a DOI link.

Example

Author names (Year) Article title. Journal of Memory. DOI.

Adapted Use

Clearly indicate if changes were made and preserve original attribution.

Commercial Use

Reuse By Third Parties

Under CC BY, third parties may reuse JM articles for commercial purposes as long as proper attribution is provided. This includes reuse in educational tools, professional training, or derivative research products.

  • Attribution must include author names, article title, journal name, and DOI.
  • Adaptations must clearly state that changes were made.
  • No implication of author endorsement is permitted.
Third Party Content

Permissions And Reused Material

Authors are responsible for securing permissions to reuse copyrighted images, instruments, or data from third parties. Provide written permission at submission and include proper credit lines in the manuscript.

  • Confirm reuse rights for images or figures not created by the authors.
  • Identify any proprietary tests or assessment tools and licensing terms.
  • Remove or replace items when permission cannot be obtained.
Data And Code

Licensing Of Research Outputs

Data, code, and materials may use different licenses from the article. Authors should select licenses that match funder requirements and ethical obligations, especially for sensitive memory research datasets.

Open Data Licenses

Open licenses support reuse, replication, and validation when privacy allows.

Restricted Access

Controlled access may be required for participant confidentiality or consent limits.

Compliance

Funder And Institutional Requirements

Many funders require open access licensing and repository deposit. JM supports these requirements by publishing under CC BY and enabling immediate open access on publication.

  • Deposit accepted or published versions in funder approved repositories.
  • Include grant numbers and funding statements in the manuscript.
  • Confirm that your licensing choice aligns with funder policy.
Attribution Integrity

Moral Rights And Proper Credit

Authors retain moral rights to be identified as the creators of their work. Reuse must never misrepresent author contributions or imply endorsement. If adapted content is published elsewhere, the adaptation should clearly acknowledge the original JM article.

  • Do not remove author names or the original journal reference.
  • Do not alter figures or captions in a way that changes meaning.
  • Provide DOI links when sharing on platforms or repositories.
Corrections

Updates And Versioning

If errors are identified after publication, JM will issue corrections or updates. The original article remains accessible with clear version notes to preserve the scholarly record.

Licensing applies to all versions of the article. Reuse should cite the most recent version and include the DOI.

Author Responsibility

Integrity And Originality

By submitting to JM, authors confirm the work is original and does not violate third party rights. All submissions undergo originality screening to support ethical publication.
